I'll be interested to hear how well that works without using the Windows
GUI.

There are two different actions we're discussing. Firmware upgrades are done
from the console, or a DOS 'window' in Microsoft-world. It's been a few y
years since I did this but I boot the laptop from the DOS-formated flash
drive which has (I think) DOS-6.x installed. Then I run the firmware .exe
file with the GPS attached to another USB port. I'll check the details
before doing this, of course.

Ja, from what I've read, an SD card is usually what you store the OSM map
on. It's unclear whether or not you can use more than one country map (or
in the USA, more than one state). If it turns out to be a big hassle to
switch between the Washington state & Oregon OSM map on Garmin, then I'll
probably go back to using my very out of date (~2010) Garmin map.

Map upgrades usually can be done using only the Garmin Camp GUI. And we need
to pay for it.

Perhaps multistate OSM maps can be put in separate diretories on the SD card
and selected when the GPS is turned on. Haven't tried this, though.

Rich
