So when you start a program, isn't there some button on your screen that
was created by starting the program?

No. I use only the panel. It has 6 launchers (with multiple applications on
each one) and the shutdown/blank screen applications. I also have 10 virtual
desktops (work spaces in Xfce4 speak) in which I can load applications.

I keep 4 work spaces populated: alpine (email), firefox, and two with two
virtual terminals each. Because Xfce is set to store settings when I kill X
these are repopulated each time I start X.

The 6 open work spaces are commonly used for gnucash, lyx, emacs, and
similar applications not used multiple times each day.

HTH,

Rich
