RJ-45 connectors are kind of like the Tasmanian devil character with teeth showing all directions... Expect to get bit by them all of the time.
I had one the other day, appears that the little catch had given up, it was still in there but broken off so the connector had backed out of the receptacle, looked everywhere, and then I noticed that the connector was not seated properly... Kind of like pilots and gear up landings, there are those who have and those who will...
