Just a hunch.

Ken,

Hunches are good. :-)

One of the folks on the lyx mail list suggested compressing the PDF file. I
had no idea this could be done so I asked DDG to find a way. The first hit
taught me that ghostscript will compress PDF files.

The equation is:
gs -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -dCompatibilityLevel=1.4 -dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress -dNOPAUSE
-dQUIET -dBATCH -sOutputFile=compressed_PDF_file.pdf input_PDF_file.pdf

Replace the names of the output and input files and ... it works! It reduced
the 3.7M PDF file to 897K, a 76% reduction in size with no loss of sharpness
in the imgage.

However, navigating to a directory to load the lyx document, or to upload a
file to fileconvoy.com, consumed 99.7-100.0% of a single CPU core and
wouldn't quit. Had to kill the applications.

Since I could not find what was causing the problem I rebooted the desktop
and that returned to normal my use of firefox, chromium, and lyx.

Stay well and enjoy your holidays,

Rich
