I read a tutorial that mentioned setting up TLS, but it sounded like that was optional. Consequently, I didn't do it. However, since I obviously have no idea what I'm doing, I'm anxiously awaiting your step by step instructions.

by default the only way to connect to imap is through ssl/tls. Did you
create the cert? ( I think you have to. There is info in the docs.)

I use IMAP, I just installed whatever was available on the Suse CDs. I have verified that port 143 is open.

Now that the smtp port is open, I am still having problems with authentication. Using Thunderbird, I am unable to login to my account. Is there something special I have to do with Postfix to allow me to login and get my email? With sendmail, it just uses the Linux user accounts.

Postifx is just the MTA (Mail Transfer Agent), it deals with sending and delivering mail to other servers, but it does not handle pickup of mail.

I assume you are trying to access your email remotely from another machine? What service are you using to get mail? POP3? IMAP? Something Else?
