I see! I have that file, but it mysteriously doesn't show up in `lsof`. I wonder if the X server is really using it. I noticed a few years ago that if my network connection was down, it took forever to open windows. Once I guessed that DNS might be involved, mapping my host name to 127.0.0.1 was a simple workaround. I'd love to discover a better fix.
