You maybe could also boost your signal strength from within the router, most I've used have that option buried somewhere as well, and default it to something really, really, low.

Move your computer closer to the transmitter or move the transmitter closer to your computer. Alternatively, you could setup a signal booster between the transmitter and your computer to relay the signal so that it is strong enough to be usable.
