There are such things as invalid characters in the first part of the e-mail address. So if you only check the domain, then you'll get a lot of false-positives and subsequently a lot of bounces to your mail server. Further it is possible to send mail to an address for which there is no MX record. For example, [EMAIL PROTECTED] works just fine, even though there is no domain "myserver.byu.edu" and hence no MX record. As long as the "myserver.byu.edu" resolves to something, the mail can still flow.
