The problem is this only works point to point.  If you want to transmit
a mile, fine.  But at the other end of the link you need another access
point to actually talk to clients.  A client might be able to hear the
signal focused with the yagi but the AP couldn't possibly hear the
client.

So yeah.  For long point-to-point shots, you can set up two dedicated
APs and pringles cans.  If you want to extend an area, mesh-style, and
have clients still be able to connect to any of the participating APs,
you have to go with WDS (or with the stuff Corey was talking about).
