Why purposely avoid Java?
Some time before I started working there (a few years ago), Java burned us (them) pretty hard. We were trying to support older Solaris, Windows, and Red Hat 7.3 at the same time. I believe locale problems played a big part, not to mention how hard it was (is?) to write a Swing app that doesn't look ugly and hang a lot.
We've gone to Qt/C++ and Python for pretty much everything and are totally happy with it.
