Yeah, and with different needs like this, the answer is to put compressors
on the car stereo, the playback device, not on the mix/master.  That would
make things in the car listenable without destroying the home experience
and fidelity of the recording.

This exactly what FM radio does.  They have super multi-band compressors to
control the signal (for modulation bandwidth reasons) as well as provide a
uniform listening experience.
