Carburated engines suck air from the fuel lines via the venturi
effect, creating an air/fuel mixture that depends on the amount of air
flow through the carburator.  There's not nearly as much fine-tuning
done in carburated engines as there is in fuel-injected engine, so
you'd see a huge efficiency increase and power increase just by
switching to a fuel injection system on the engine.  This is
completely do-able, and there's even an open source/open hardware
project called MegaSquirt that you can do it with.
