Doran is right about being skittish about
connecting-to-your-database-as-root.  However, that is completely
unrelated to using PostgreSQL vs MySQL.  No applications should ever
connect as root.  root should only be used to manage
users/permissions.

He may also be right about the being skittish about the Oracle buyout
too.  I know I am worried.  :(

Back to phpmyadmin.  Don't put the root password in the config file!
Eeek!  Bad touch, bad, bad.
Either create a new user with just enough permissions to accomplish
your goals, or at the very least leave phpmyadmin to prompt you for
user and password information.  Or bettter, do both.  Use a new user
that you enter every time you connect with phpmyadmin.
