I agree. However for many folks Linux is more expensive than Windows, so they resign themselves to buying into MS's control. For me personally, the cheapest OS/system for my relatives is OS X. I'll stick to Linux myself of course. Don't get me wrong--Linux is great and getting better all the time, and is better than OS X or Windows for me. But I don't have the time to be a full-time sysadmin for my friends and family.
