Leaving your wifi open is akin to leaving the window blinds open, so someone can use your light to read their book. I get what you're saying, but I don't agree. We've been seeing cases for years now, where owners of wireless access points get charged for crimes they didn't commit, because they left their access point open and available for all. Crimes range from child pornography to illegal filesharing. Frankly, I'm not interested in having my door broken down at 2 in the morning, and going through all the incompetence of the police, just because I didn't take the 5 minutes necessary to lock down my Internet. To each their own, but I have better things to do with my life than wait for apologies from the police, because they didn't do their homework.
