I got my current job through a recruiter and have had a great time of it.
Great place to work, highest salary I've ever gotten. We did a
contract-to-hire thing for 6 months. The fee to the recruiter came out of
the employer's pocket, not mine. He just paid an extra chunk for me over
those 6 months, and I got the same. My boss was glad when the 6 months were
over, of course, but it made little difference to me. During that period, I
was a direct employee of the recruiter, so I myself wasn't "contracting".
YMMV, of course, but I've had a great experience.
