If you add "gnu" to the search it helps (though it's really not gnu!).
Or fsf, or gpl.  The man page is your source though.

Basically I started from the example config file that comes with motion.

I've attached the file that I've been using.  The motion.conf example
file is very well commented, so you should be up and running quite soon.
 I believe my instance of motion logged just jpeg images to /var/motion.
 It can create avi files of the motion sequences though.

Also my config file had a mask defined in it mask a portion of the view
out of the motion detection algorithm.
