Ok that makes sense. What about software raid? Would software raid still be
one you wouldn't "shred" a file on? Or would it operate just the same as a
regular independent drive for secure erasing?



And while it's true that recovery programs would be stymied by just writing
zeros, a physical hardware recovery is still possible in certain lab
situations. Since I'm rather extreme about my privacy at times, I want to
be able to ensure that any file I "shred" is unrecoverable, period. Yes, I
understand about hot spares. But that's not a big deal. In the event of a
raid substituting a hot spare for a regular member drive, I can just use
the secure erase program on the file, and then use the libata secure erase
on the drive it kicked out (provided the drive is still recognized and was
just kicked out for an error. If the drive is totally dead then it's a moot
point anyway because nothing short of a good strong magnet will change any
data on the platters).
