also check your plugins. Some of them start to get bogged down as the history of your site gets longer. I remember dealing with one a few years ago (don't remember the name) that would parse the entire log history for every hit. Just Terrible.
And Wordpress itself is not a bad thing, as long as you get on the security announce mailing list and keep updated the same day they release fixes.
