Another option for the "convenience paranoia" level is zoho.com. I have one of my domains set up (free) at namecheap.com and using zoho's free (no-ad) mail service. I've used my grandfather'ed free google apps account for a lot longer, but zoho seems to work pretty well. For a little more money you get more storage and full OpenXchange.
