Hey all,

I just want to send out a warning to those using 1and1.

I have my domain jshaver.net registered through them and so I was also
using their dns services. I decided to sign up for an external DNS
service with API access so I could try out some fun stuff with my
domains. After signing up and setting up my dns records on the other
service, I changed my authoritative NS records with them (a registrar
level change).

Normally everything will continue to work and over the next 48 hours
ISPs will start to get the new NS records (but nothing actually
changes other than where the records are now coming frome since the
records on the 2 sets of nameservers are the same, and so no one
really notices a difference).

However the transition didn't go so smoothly for me, since as soon as
I changed may nameservers with 1and1, they deleted all of my records
from their nameservers. I'm not using them anymore? right?

So for the next 48 hours people may or may not be able to resolve my
domain (no big deal there's nothing there anyways) and they may or may
not be able to email me (slightly bigger deal since I do actually have
email on that domain) depending on whether or not the NS records with
their ISP were recently cached.

1 and 1 obviously has no idea how DNS works.

Thanks for listening to my rant.
