This is the adapter that was everything I wanted:
http://www.amazon.com/Rosewill-Wireless-Adapter-External-RNX-N250UBE/dp/B006WWN016

I tried the Alfa adapter that was suggested, and it LOOKED perfect,
but it was just flaky with hostapd. I couldn't ever pin down exactly
what the issue was, whether it was an inconsistent driver, firmware,
or whether my unit was just bad, but I gave up after several days of
trying everything I could think of/find.

That Rosewill adapter, however, has a chipset that works perfectly
(Realtek RTL8192CU) with hostapd, the signal strength is impressive,
it has detachable antennas, and it's $16. If you want something a
little more compact, the unit I mentioned from adafruit has the same
chipset and a smaller form factor, but it's $20 + shipping:
https://www.adafruit.com/products/1030. You probably have a few more
options for the really compact solutions, but with their inherently
weaker signal, it's not something that I looked into.
