In case this helps your cause, I figured I'd mention I've got two compact Rosewill adapters that I've been using for months with hostapd -- one on a pi, and one on my pfsense router -- and they work perfectly. That chipset is Ralink RT3070. I can't find my specific Rosewill model for sale anywhere, and the signal strength was lacking for my project, but I thought I'd let you know that that chipset seems to work flawlessly as well.
Also, if you do go with the RTL8192CU on raspbian, you may have to update your version of hostapd to a newer version than the raspbian repos provide. This was the case when I set it up originally, several months ago, and I imagine it still is. Anyway, good luck with your project.
