First, let me get the link out of the way: http://www.handmadehero.org/
For those of you that don't know, Casey Muratori (somewhat known in the games industry, works at RAD tools, and did this awesome article series on compression-based programming, you should google it) is doing a game old-school style. He's not using an engine, he's not using a framework, he's just building a game from scratch in C++. He's doing it cross-platform, he's going to have it all be public domain at the end, and you can watch him make it and talk about it every weekday evening (you can miss days, it's ok). I'm going to be participating as much as I can, because I love Casey's work and he's a good guy and I LOVE the old ways of coding efficiently and awesomely. Listening to someone like Sid Meier talk about making games just gets me giddy inside, and I'm really hoping Casey emulates some of that awesomeness for the old ways of building a game by hand. This is about as open source as it gets, and it's something my oldest two and I are excited about. I hope someone else out there is too.
