You say your setup "produces no sound". It's not clear to me whether you get no sound when running mplayer from the command line, or whether it is only at the Squeezebox.
As far as I can see, mplayer itself should work in that setup. I'm not sure what to do if it doesn't work, but a log might help. But SlimServer may not be finding mplayer. You could try running SlimServer from the command line with a switch such as -d_source, and seeing what information you get. I'm pretty sure that mplayer.sh neds to be modified if you want to keep mplayer where you have it. But I'm having problems myself at present.
