I know that there are incompatibilities between some versions of the
codecs and some versions of mplayer. When I had them wrong, mplayer
wouldn't play a BBC stream at all.

The only codec one needs is cook.bundle, which should work if it is in
the folder you mention. One would then get error messages complaining
about not finding other versions such as cook.so.6.0 and cook3260, but
then cook.bundle should kick in to provide good sound.

I'm not sure if having more than one codec creates the breakup, but
again can say that it's not something I've experienced.

It would be good if the AlienBBC page could have the relevant codec and
version of mplayer, but I think copyright issues may prevent this.
