Correct, no sound card on the server - it's in the garage, so difficult to justify why it would need one to her indoors!!
Adding the extra parameter removes much of the untidiness, and I now have a 10Mb wav file of a lady talking about bird flu. Still some DLL error messages though. Not sure what I have just proved - obviously I can connect, dowload a stream and save it as a wav file. Does that help to pinpoint what's going on with slimserver? As ever, thanks for the support!!
