Just a thought Michael, but could the SlimCD init script be setup to
mount, say hda1, and then look for all the config stuff in some defined
place on hda1?  If it fails, it could then default to the fixed CD
script.

Look at the dsl documentation: by default DSL does imho restore from hda1. Configure your /opt/.backup_device and put hda1 in it. SlimCD/DSL will now store its configuration to hda1 at shutdown, and restore at next boot.

It seems a shame to have to install the whole thing to HD, when the CD
works so well.

My intention was always to have a slim :-) linux distro to be installed on some memory module. I therefore do not have too much experience running it in live cd mode.
