Changing the RETRY_TIME seems to have very much improved the situation. I'm not sure that it has solved it completely (I have been listening in the background, so not noticing so much - and there was a complete stop at one point, which may have been due to a cordless phone, though I thought UK phones did not have that issue), but it seems pretty OK.
