Well, recording the program to hard drive and then playing it worked fine, as I expected.
I'm tpmted to believe that what is happening is that some process, probably one of the copies of mplayer, is grabbing all the CPU for very short periods, and that this is causing the choppiness and the occasional loss of connection to SlimServer.
