Not quite sure about the two cases you are comparing, but when used
with -ao pcm, I think mplayer writes output in 32K chunks.  I expect
with standard audio out it does it differently.  The actual performance
seen is then dependant on the OS interacting with mplayer and slimserver
as it depends on whether pipes only hold 4K (linux 2.4) or will aborb
the whole burst (windows, linux 2.6).  I settled on 128 as the mplayer
cache size for Alien as it seemed to keep everything running....

For now would it be a good idea for Neil to do a build without the long
break detection and leave this for the user to clear (by pressing stop
and play or next)
