Hi Michael - well, I guess my parents will be getting a SlimCD based on
a Frugal install instead! :) I assumed "Frugal" meant cut down and
didn't really investigate it! I'm still not sure why it's called
Frugal!

Sometimes it seems to be better if you don't understand what it means at all. I thought "frugal" was some fantasy word :-)

This guide ('PDF format' (http://tinyurl.com/7jx63)) got me up and
running in no time...

Yep, this is the same I used for my installation.

Very impressive stuff!

It is indeed. I was fascinated by the idea of having my computer boot from usb stick or some other non-moving memory. Thanks a lot DSL! :-)

I'm still waiting for the official DSL 2.1 to be released before I'll upload 1.5.

PPS. I would also recommend setting vga=normal as while the other modes
are more aesthetically appealing on my setup when using vga=791 (or 788)
the video is corrupted after exiting from X (ie. when rebooting so not
possible to see shutdown messages - only a minor issue though).

This might be depending on your graphics adapter. I never touched the screen settings for my use.

My current plan is for them to rip and tag on a more powerful laptop
then copy the tracks over to the SlimServer PC using FileZilla (on a

You know Samba is installed with SlimCD? You could create a share for Windows and have them do the transfer using simple d'n'd.

Do you know if it is possible to have betaftpd mount the filesystem
read-write when a user connects, then have it remount read-only when
the user disconnects?

No. Betaftp seems to be a reall minimalistic server: there are imho _no_ configuration parameters available. All you want to configure you have to do before compiling it...

But there's always another solution: do the transfer using some script. You can have ssh execute a command on the remote machine and return immediately. The script therefore could be something like this:

ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] mount -o remount,rw /mnt/music
ftp -s:myftpscript
ssh [EMAIL PROTECTED] mount -o remount,ro /mnt/music

That's the method I'm using myself (replacing FTP with rsync). For more information about FTP scripting on Windows see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=96269
