That's not what I understood Adrian(Triode) meant, however the skip
foward/back functionality while the stream is running is what I would
like to implement. However to do it would require some mods to the
Slimserver - creation of some new client variables and some sort of
FFWD/REW callback.

As I see it

1. Need to ensure the elapsed time since start of program is accurate
(i.e. unlike present Start functionality)
2. When the stream is playing if a user presses FFWD (or REW), the
elapsed time is noted and a new "Start" time is calculated
adding/subtracting the required time difference (e.g. +1 min for FFW or
-1 Min for rew).
3. Stream is restarted using the URL with new START parameter value.

It is unpredictable what would happen on a live stream.
It would be best if the latest version of Mplayer is used with
Bandwidth parameter - this will ensure a 3 secs delay versus a 15 secs
delay when restarting the stream afer FFW/RWED. ( I think a little bit
of snooping on RealPlayer will help understand how BBC Player does it
now). The user interface of Squeezbox remote will limit the
functionality compared to the UI of BBC Player.

That said, I still think there is also a need to specify a start time
offset before the stream starts - this is what I think Adrian is
proposing.
