Thanks for the hint - another RTFM problem, unfortunately: reading the 1.00 instructions with 1.00a. I evidently have problems reading below the fold...
Updated mplayer with yum, now plays BBC radio fine, and possibly others - not fully checked yet. However Classic FM (GWR) definitely doesn't play, though it looks as if it is not our end at fault but theirs... backtrace etc available on request.
