I think it really depends on how the categories are setup. I don't want to end up in a situation where I am required to setup both genres and categories on all my tracks. I have already spent a lot of time to setup genres on all my music so I would like a solution that would be able to re-use that information.
I think it might be useful if it where possible to setup categories based on genres, albums, artists like: "Category1 = Exclude tracks with either genre=rock or genre=christmas" "Category2 = Only tracks with both genre=pop and genre=country" "Category3 = Include only artist=shakira but exclude album=laundry service" "Category4 = Include only playlist1 but exclude those also in playlist2" But if you need to setup each single track included in a category I don't think I would use it beacause it would be to much work to configure the categories for all songs in my music collection. Also I would probably need to use different tools for setting up genres (as tags) and setting up categoryes (in slimserver plugin). I am already able to setup playlists as my category samples above using SQL with the SQLPlayList plugin available on my download site. The SQLPlayList does however only support random track listening within a playlist, so there is no browse mechanism implemented in it. However, the tree browse mechanism can be useful but I think it would be better to use the existing multiple genres for this. As an example it would work like: 1. Browse to genre=pop This would show all tracks with genre pop, but it would also show all additional genres which exists on those tracks. 2. Browse down to sub genre=latin This would show all tracks which have both genre pop and lating, it would also show all additional genres which exists on those tracks. In a family environment it would be useful to be able to select "Dads music" and then only show music with specific genres pre-configured for "Dads music". In the same way when i choose "Kids music" it would exclude some genres and artists pre-configured as not suitable for kids. So I guess what I am really saying is that it would be useful for me if it where possible to setup the categories based on the genre, artist, album fields. But it would not be useful for me if I was required to setup each single track.
