AndyS, Unlike real SB2/3, softsqueeze can't decode windows media itself - it relies on the server to do this. On windows this should work through the use of two helper applications which ship with slimserver: wmadec and socketwrapper.
Are both of these enabled in any firewall software you have to allow them to access the internet? Sometimes people have problems with socketwrapper which get fixed by reinstalling the server. Could you post the output of enabling --d_source debugging when you try to play a stream.
