To get better diagnostics use -v after Mplayer command. This wil give info about received stream and what codecs are trying to be used.
With pre7 if you use multiple -v you get more diagnostics. so "mplayer -v -v rtsp..." gives more info thatn "mplayer -v rtsp..." I find 2 or 3 "-v" enough.
