OK, turned off --really-quiet and turned on -v (verbose in mplayer?) It still looks like it should be playing (and I can still play real audio files from command line with mplayer). Looking over the logs the only error that looks like anything is that it says it can't open the cook codec (which is installed).
Still - it makes no sense to me.
