The fact that mplayer works in standalone on a BBC station points to a
configuration problem or a socketwrapper.  Since you did the install
from the installer and changed nothing - I think the confguration is
OK.  So we need to exhaust the socketwrapper area.  

The socketwrapper problem is caused by software which monitors
networking - typically firewall, antivirus but also includes VPN
clients, anti spyware and IM protection.  The version of socketwrapper
which got around this problem was created by Ian Cook so it is worth
trying.

I copied the Ian Cook experimental socketwrapper and you should be able
to pick it up from here

Save the current socketwrapper (I think it is  the server/Bin folder)
app  and replace by Ian Cook's version and then try again.  Just to
make things easier make sure firewall and AV are disabled.

Just for the record what Firewall and AV s/w are you running ?
