I've run ethereal and I can't see any significant diff between R4FM and R4LW. There are a few diff netween RealPlayer and Mplayer on R4LW but I don't know if they are significant. Mplayer gets so far and then stops - as if it has forgotten to start playing or doesn't recognise the first packet in the stream.
R4LW is unusual in that it uses a different "flavour" of settings and is mono compared to most other BBC stations (except for World) and hence has a low bitrate requirement. What version of AlienBBC & Mplayer are you using.
