Ah but what about this for a possibility? Copyright issues not
withstanding....

Change slimserver-convert.conf so that instead of streaming direct to
the SB, mplayer writes the raw 'real audio' file to disk. Then once the
write is complete let the mplayer decoder work in its own time (say
overnight). The next day you have a wav file you can listen to and you
get the advantage of the Slimserver's nice web pages as the UI.

No idea if this is going to work, of course, but it could be a viable
workaround until a) the code can be optimized or b) the BBC can be
persuaded to stream some other format.
