mplayer is an ordinary app does not have any special drivers - it just
takes input from network processes it and outputs to a port. This sort
of app should not crash XP.  

If the mplayer file is not corrupted in some way then it is an
interaction with your system config. - what Firewall/Anti-virus
software have you installed ?

Since mplayer standalone test fails - I first suggest download a new
copy of install EXE file and reinstall.  I would advise against using
other versions of mplayer as they are abuilt slightly differently and
we know the version in the AlienBBC install works fine for many users.
