The Bandwidth option is purely an Mplayer option (and in this context
only RealAUdio) nothing to do with Slimserver. It implements what is
known as RealPlayer's TurboPlay.

This feature means that for non-live stream, data is sent as fast as
possible to the player to enable playing to start as soon as possible.
Typically with BBC Listen Again about 2 secs instead of 15 secs without
the Bandwidth option. Without this option skip forward/backward where
take 15 secs before play starts making the feature barely acceptable.

Before your post, there have been only about 3 users (2 XP and one FC5)
who have reported this issue. I'm sure there were a number of others who
have used the fix but it is a very small number compared to the number
of downloads of AlienBBC.

Overall most users do not have a problem and enjoy the benefit, so I
think it is right to use the option by default.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say that Bandwidth not in pre8 is
"telling" - it is a newish RealPlayer feature which was simply not
implemented in Mplayer before Jan 2006 - no other reason.

I believe the implementation of the feature in Mplayer is not quite
right and so a few users experience this problem - the only way for it
to get fixed would probably for me to debug it and volunteer a patch-
but it is not urgent and like Mplayer's inability to play the R4 LW
stream (which annoys cricket fans).

You also comment that your mplayer build is not pre8 - if your build of
Mplayer is before jan 2006 then your problem is not related to the
Bandwidth option.
