Can't really help you on the SlimCD, but most Linuxes are a bit behind
MS in terms of hardware support, and IME SlimCD supports less than many
others.

You could try ClarkConnect (CC3.2).  It's Red Hat based so you can
install the slimserver rpm and you can administer it via a web UI or
via PuTTY to get a command shell.

They've been used by novices to succesfully setup slimserver on CC3.2.
