I'm making an educated guess, but license costs generally depend on the
product and the market.

So for PDA, Mobile and even Nokia 770 - I guess Real probably made it
attractive as otherwise it would lose out to Windows in a new market.
Also the products would not break the general RealPlayer licence terms:
that a decoder is used to produce audio/video playback only.

The AE product (actually another company developed the core product)
probably licensed the Realdecoder but again audio is the end result
with builtin speakers.

The Squeezebox has the possibility of recording etc. makes it a
different class of product so Real may look for a higher licence fee -
or perhaps refuses to sell a license. On the other hand Slimdevices
have to consider the total costs (license fees is only a small part) to
support the shrinking number of broadcasters who are Real only (and poor
audio quality) against the need to use the cash to add features (e.g
Pandora, Rhapsody support) which differentiate the product in a market
niche that is becoming more competitive.
