Michael - did you get chance to try your minimal build mplayer on your Via server? My SS runs on a Via based PC, and my problem (previously discussed) is that Alien/mplayer will stop after about 20-30 minutes when playing "listen again" BBC audio. It is fixed by removing the bandwidth option, but this does have some side effects (not too major) of delayed start and very jerky screen updates (time/visualiser). Prompted by this thread, I've just done a compile of mplayer after having worked out how to set it to 386 with no MMX etc. Unfortunately this didn't make any difference. I should probably raise a bug against mplayer, but I'm not sure I have a good enough grasp over exactly what is happening!
