Retagging was quite painless using MP3Tag - although it may take a while depending on the number of files in your library. Just load all your music files, select all.
In Tools, Options, Tags, Mpeg tick ID3v1 and ID3v2 select the radio button for ID3v2.4 tick remove APE Save all your files. You might want to try it out on just a few files first though.
