I have been thinking about this quite extensively and there is a biggish
snag.

I have long thought wouldn't it be good to have a Pi with Squeezelite
and a built in VPN client do it could be used as a remote player
anywhere. I have even gone to the extent of half building one before I
hit the snag. Control.

Unless you have another device at the remote location with its own VPN
client the only way you can control the remote player is at your home
location. 

This is why site to site VPNs are so much better.
