I still have the same issue. The firewall is there (it is listed as
"jive"). There were a few old rules  for softqueeze which I have had in
the past, but uninstalled a long time back.

Could Malwarebytes be blocking it somehow? 

Can I use log files at the server to try to find the problem? It seems
that there is no reason for this not to work. It's a fairly standard
system. So what gives? I am pretty proficient technically, if someone
can tell  me what to check, where to start looking, I will dig. The fact
that softsqueeze discovers my server already says something, right?
presumably at that point it tries to connect and here is the problem.
What kind of connection does it make? what port? I can dig out wireshark
and see what is happening.
