There are two parts to an audio stream. 1. The transport mechanism or protocols - how to endcoded audio data is delivered from the source 2. The encoding of the audio data - the codec. For BBC there are multiple transport protocols available - http, DASH, HLS (for Apple), Flash (RTMP), HDS. These are not audio encoding formats. The BBC uses AAC encoding for all the above transports except for http shoutcast streams which are MP3 except for the HD http stream for R3 which is AAC over http.
